What you get

You receive a postdoc scholarship (funding to do research after your doctorate) for up to two years abroad. The amount depends on where you go:

• Stanford: about 70,000 USD per year (around 65,000 EUR), a travel grant of 7,500 USD per year, an optional family allowance of 15,000 USD per year, and Stanford postdoc medical benefits.
• MIT and the Broad Institute: about 71,000 USD per year (around 66,000 EUR), with the same travel and family allowances and health insurance.
• Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore: NTU employs you on a salary from 70,000 SGD per year (around 48,000 EUR), plus a living and family allowance from 30,000 SGD per year, a research allowance of 5,000 SGD per year and standard health insurance.

After your stay, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation may fund a research position for you at a Swedish university for up to two more years if you cannot find another post.

Who can apply

• Degree: You hold a doctorate from a Swedish university. When your postdoc starts, no more than 2 years may have passed since your dissertation date.
• Link to Sweden: You keep a lasting connection to a Swedish university or a similar non-profit research organisation. Without it, your application is not considered.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Host arranged: You have arranged a host at your chosen institution and can supply their written invitation. You must not already work or hold a scholarship there.
• No double funding: You cannot combine this scholarship with any other stipend or paid position.
• What decides it: The main criterion is scientific excellence, judged against your career stage.

How to apply

You apply online in English through the Foundation's e-application system, between 16 October and 16 November. You may apply to only one of the Foundation's postdoc calls. The list of selected scholars is published on the Foundation's website in late spring.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut narrowly. You need a recent Swedish doctorate, a standing tie to a Swedish research body, and a confirmed host at Stanford, MIT/Broad or NTU, which keeps the field small. In the 2024/2025 cycle only about 20 places were filled across all three destinations. Selection turns on scientific excellence, so a strong publication record and a well-argued research proposal are decisive. If you clearly fit and line up a committed host early, your prospects are solid.
