What the House of Nobility Scholarships give you

You will receive funding for your studies. The amount is determined individually by each fund, and no fixed rate is published. The funding comes from 331 individual foundations, which are administered by the Swedish House of Nobility (Riddarhuset). Each foundation was established by a private donor and has its own rules. Every year, around 2,000 people, mostly members of noble families, receive grants from these funds. Most grants are intended for higher education. Many require full-time study for at least one full academic year. The grants awarded are usually paid out in May or June of the year following the application.

Who can apply

• Family: You belong to a family that is officially listed (‘registered’) in the Swedish Register of the Nobility. Some funds are also open to registered non-noble families (§ 37 families) or direct descendants of a specific founder.
• Which fund: Each foundation determines its own eligible group; this often consists of a specific branch of the family. Many give priority to the founder’s descendants.
• Level of study: Most grants are intended for higher education. Some also apply to upper secondary school (Gymnasium) or officer training. Basic military training (GMU) is not eligible for funding.
• Field of study: All disciplines are eligible. Some funding is restricted to specific fields such as law, medicine or the natural sciences.
• Age: Some funds specify an age range (for example, 10–25 or up to 27). Others do not specify one.
• Financial need: For some types of financial assistance, you will need to provide evidence of need. To do this, you will be asked to provide details of your income, savings and assets.
• Nationality: Some funds are restricted to Swedish citizens or persons resident in Sweden. Others, however, are not.

How to apply

You must apply online via the Riddarhuset application portal between 1 July and 15 October each year. You must submit your application by 15 October and sign it digitally; otherwise, it will not be processed. Start preparing well in advance and include proof of your studies or your admission for the coming academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

The selection criteria are very strict. Only members of families listed in the Swedish Register of the Nobility may apply, and many funding programmes are further restricted to a specific branch of the family. As a result, the pool of eligible applicants is small. So, if you clearly belong to an eligible family and meet the criteria of a funding programme in terms of age, field of study or need, your chances are good. With 331 funding programmes and around 2,000 grants per year, you should apply for every funding programme for which you are eligible and submit your application well in advance.
