What the SFF stay scholarship gives you

You will receive free accommodation for a writing residency (a residency during which you can concentrate entirely on your writing) at one of three locations. For the two residencies in Greece, you will also receive a flat-rate travel allowance of 4,000 SEK (about 350 EUR). If you travel to Greece by train, you can also claim an additional 2,000 SEK (approximately 175 EUR), which will be paid to you retrospectively upon presentation of receipts. The grant is awarded by Sveriges Författarförbund, the Swedish Writers’ Union, to its own members. The three options are:

• Athens, Greece: A two-week stay at the Ariane Wahlgren House near the Acropolis. Every year, 26 places are available in shared rooms in the main building and 8 places in a self-contained terrace flat.
• Kavalla, northern Greece: a one-month stay in a guesthouse between mid-March and mid-November (8 places per month per year).
• Runmarö, Stockholm archipelago: a two-week stay between 15 May and 15 October. This covers accommodation only, excluding a travel allowance.

Who can apply

• Membership: You must be a member of the Swedish Writers’ Union (Sveriges Författarförbund). Only members may apply.
• Your writing: There are no guidelines regarding the quality or length of what you have written.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. The key factor is whether you are a trade union member.
• Who gets priority: The trade union gives priority to long-standing members and to those who have not yet received a residency or travel grant from it.
• Physical access: None of the accommodation is suitable for people with reduced mobility, and the terrain (particularly on Runmarö) can be challenging.

How to apply

All three locations are announced once a year in the autumn. Applications are made via an online form. The trade union sends the direct link exclusively by email to its members; it is therefore not available on the website. The application deadline for the 2027 residencies is 15 September 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This residency is open exclusively to trade union members, so the pool of applicants is already small. As your published works are not assessed, long-standing members and those who have not recently received a trade union grant have an advantage. If you are an active member who has not received any funding recently, your chances are quite good.
