What the Coffin Fund gives you

You will receive a one-off grant of approximately 14,000 EUR (£12,000) to study for a Master’s degree at the School of Advanced Study (SAS) at the University of London. This money will cover your tuition fees. Any remaining funds will be used to cover your living costs. Only one student receives this grant each year. In the academic year 2024/25, the amount was £12,000,, but the exact figure may change for this round. You may use the grant whilst undertaking a full-time or part-time Master’s programme lasting up to two years.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are starting a Master’s degree at the School of Advanced Study. Distance-learning programmes, postgraduate diplomas (PGDip) and postgraduate certificates (PGCert) are not taken into account.
• Field of study: Every subject offered at SAS.
• How you pay: You are funding your studies yourself and do not yet receive a grant that covers all the costs.
• Nationality and residence: Anyone can apply, whether you live in the UK, the EU or anywhere else in the world.
• Prior qualifications: You do not yet hold a master’s degree or higher qualification.
• Grades: You have achieved outstanding results during your Bachelor’s degree, particularly in your final dissertation or thesis.
• Motivation: You can express a genuine interest in studying your chosen Master’s programme at SAS.

How to apply

First, apply for a place on your chosen SAS Master’s programme. Then complete the online scholarship application form and send your documents to the SAS Student Administration Office. The application deadline is 19 March (23:59 British time), and you should receive a response by the end of May.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one student wins each year, so the competition is fierce. Good grades alone count for little if the final thesis is not outstanding. However, the eligibility criteria are quite strict: you must be self-funded, must not already hold a Master’s degree, and must be studying specifically at the SAS. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you clearly meet the criteria and can produce an exceptional final thesis, your prospects are good.
