What you get

You will receive a one-off grant from the University of Birmingham to fund your own summer travel project. This is an independent trip that you organise outside your regular studies. The grant covers all or part of the actual costs – such as flights, accommodation, insurance, visa fees and any vaccinations. There is no fixed amount. The amount of funding depends on the funds available and the estimated costs of your project. A project could, for example, be a volunteering placement in a developing country, a research trip not related to your studies, or a trip to gain experience in an area close to your heart.

Who can apply

• University: You are a full-time student at the University of Birmingham.
• Degree level: You are studying on a bachelor’s or master’s degree programme (on-campus study).
• Your project: The course takes place during the summer break and does not count towards your degree. It must be original and may also be outside your own field of study, whether of an academic or cultural nature.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Nationality: All nationalities and countries of residence, including international students.
• Grades: You have an excellent academic record.
• Other funding: You are not yet receiving full funding from another scholarship or research grant.

How to apply

Applications are made online via the university’s application form. You must submit a project description, a breakdown of costs, a brief explanation of how the trip will contribute to your personal development, and an academic letter of recommendation from a member of the university staff. There is no interview. A panel comprising staff from various departments will make a decision during the spring semester based on your written application, and successful applicants will be notified by email.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is restricted to students from Birmingham, so the pool of applicants is already small. A clear, well-thought-out project with a convincing case for your personal or academic development is the key to success. If you meet the criteria and have given careful thought to the project and its implications, your chances are good. The application deadline for the current round has already passed, so keep an eye out for the next one.
