About this scholarship
De Osma Studentship
You will receive a one-off payment of about 3,540 EUR (£3,000). Use it to undertake research for at least six weeks at the Instituto de Valencia de Don Juan in Madrid, usually during the Easter holidays. The Instituto is a centre for Spanish art history. It houses a collection of Spanish and Hispano-Moorish ceramics, medieval sculptures and artefacts, as well as a library containing medieval and early modern documents and journals on early Spanish history. The scholarship is awarded by the University of Oxford. One scholarship is awarded each year, but only if a suitable candidate applies.
Who can apply
- University: You are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at the University of Oxford.
- Field of study: Your work focuses on Spanish studies, such as Spanish art history, language and literature, history, geography or archaeology.
- Spanish knowledge: You can read and speak enough Spanish to make use of the Instituto’s collections and library.
- Research plan: You have a specific project that you would like to carry out at the Instituto in Madrid.
- Nationality: All nationalities welcome.
How to apply
Please send your application documents to the Registrar’s Office at the University of Oxford. Please include a detailed description of your proposed research project and a letter of recommendation from a lecturer or supervisor. The application deadline is 19 December.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must already be studying at Oxford, be specialising in Spanish studies, and have sufficient knowledge of Spanish to be able to study at a specialist institute in Madrid; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. Only one scholarship is awarded, and it may remain unfilled if no suitable candidate applies. If you clearly meet these requirements and submit a convincing, detailed research proposal, your chances are good.
