University of Oxford - A Johnson Memorial Prize for a MPhys Project in Astrophysics

What you get

The best MPhys research project in the field of astrophysics will receive a one-off cash prize of about 176 EUR (£150). This is an academic award and not a monthly scholarship. The Department of Physics at the University of Oxford awards this prize once a year in recognition of outstanding project work.

Who can apply

• Degree and year: You are a fourth-year MPhys student at Oxford and are taking part in the ‘Final Honour School of Physics’.
• Field: Your MPhys research project focuses on astrophysics. In your fourth year, you will work independently, under the supervision of a tutor, on a theoretical or experimental research problem and produce a comprehensive report.
• University: You are studying at the University of Oxford.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Performance: Your project is to be recognised as the best MPhys project of the year in the field of astrophysics.

How to apply

You do not need to apply, and there is no application deadline. The prize is awarded automatically on the basis of your project results as part of the ‘Final Honour School of Physics’.

How realistic are your chances?

It is a single main prize awarded for a specialist subject at a university in any given year. Only fourth-year physics students at Oxford who are working on an astrophysics project are eligible for the award, and only one of them wins. You cannot apply for it, as there is no application process. The prize is awarded to the student who submits the most convincing project; therefore, you should regard it more as recognition of outstanding work than as something you can actively strive to achieve.
