The NTT Prize in Biological Physics

You are being awarded a one-off award of about 175 EUR (150 GBP) for your outstanding work as part of your fourth-year research project in biophysics. The prize is awarded by the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford, which presents 22 different awards each year for outstanding achievement in physics studies. Biophysics investigates the physical foundations of life, ranging from the movement and energy storage of cells to the measurement of individual molecules. It is linked to biochemistry, medicine and nanotechnology.

• Degree: You are in the fourth and final year of the four-year Master’s degree programme in Physics (MPhys).
• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Field: Her main research project is in the field of biophysics.
• Performance: You’ve got the best project in this field, which means you’ll achieve top marks in your final exams.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

There is neither an application process nor an application deadline. The department selects the winner automatically on the basis of the marks and certificates from the physics examinations taken in the final year.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one student wins each year, and the pool of candidates is very small: MPhys graduates from Oxford who have chosen biological physics as the subject of their project. You cannot apply for it, so your chances depend entirely on producing by far the best project in this field. Think of it as recognition for outstanding work rather than a grant you can rely on.
