Maintenance Loan for students at Bishop Grosseteste University

You will receive up to £10,830 per year (about 12,580 EUR) to cover your living costs whilst you are studying full-time or part-time. This is a government loan, not a grant, so you will have to repay it after you finish your studies as soon as your income exceeds a certain threshold. The amount depends on where you live during the semester, your household income and your age. You may be eligible for a higher amount, up to £12,345 per year (approximately 14,340 EUR), if you are entitled to social security benefits whilst studying, for example as a single parent or as a student couple with children. You will receive a basic amount of up to £5,048 per year (approximately 5,860 EUR), regardless of your income. The loan is paid out in three instalments spread throughout the year. Part-time students receive a proportion of the full amount, based on the intensity of their studies. The money is paid out by the Student Loans Company via your national student finance organisation (England, Wales, Northern Ireland or SAAS in Scotland).

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a British national, an Irish citizen residing in the Common Travel Area, or an EU citizen with ‘Pre-Settled’ or ‘Settled’ status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
• Residence: You have lived in the United Kingdom, the islands or the European Economic Area during the three years prior to the 1 September in which your degree programme begins, and you are in the United Kingdom on your first day.
• Level: You do not yet hold an honours degree. The PGCE, a postgraduate teacher training course, is an exception to this.
• Where you study: You are enrolled on a Bachelor’s or PGCE degree programme at Bishop Grosseteste University (now Lincoln Bishop University).
• Field of study: Any subject within a Bachelor’s or PGCE programme.
• Age: There is no upper age limit. A separate, lower rate applies if you are 60 years or older when the course starts.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a standard government loan, not a competitive scholarship, so there is no selection process. If you meet the eligibility criteria regarding nationality, residence and enrolment, you are entitled to it. The exact amount depends on your household income and your living situation, not on your grades. Apply for the loan in good time so that the money is available at the start of the semester.
