What the NHS Bursary gives you

You receive a flat 1,081 GBP (about 1,250 EUR) per year regardless of your income. On top of that comes a means-tested bursary of up to 3,447 GBP (about 3,980 EUR) per year, worked out from your family's income. The exact means-tested amount depends on where you study and live: up to 3,447 GBP if your university is in London and you live away from home, up to 2,855 GBP (about 3,300 EUR) outside London, and up to 2,384 GBP (about 2,750 EUR) if you live with your parents. The NHS also pays your tuition directly to the university: up to 9,790 GBP (about 11,300 EUR) per year for a 5- or 6-year undergraduate degree, and up to 3,930 GBP (about 4,540 EUR) for a 3- or 4-year graduate-entry course. Depending on your situation, you may get extra allowances: support if you have a partner or children, help with childcare costs, refunds of travel and accommodation during placements, and up to 28,397 GBP (about 32,800 EUR) if you study with a disability. This is state student funding from the NHS Business Services Authority in England.

Who can apply

• Field of study: You are training to become a doctor or dentist.
• Course type: You are on a 5- or 6-year undergraduate degree, or a 3- or 4-year graduate-entry course, listed in the Office for Students' medical and dental student intake.
• Study year: The bursary covers only the later years of your course, for example years 5 and 6 of an undergraduate degree, or year 2 onward of a graduate-entry course. It does not cover the whole degree.
• Second degree: You can apply even if medicine or dentistry is your second degree.
• Where you live: You normally live in England and are an English resident on the first day of your first academic year. If you moved to England from another part of the UK only to study, you cannot apply.

How to apply

You apply online through your NHS Bursary account, by registering a new account or logging into an existing one. Apply within 9 months of the start of your academic year. The window for 2026/27 is open now.

How realistic are your chances?

No panel picks winners here. This is state funding, so if you meet the fixed rules, you get it. What matters is that you fit every condition: you are on a listed medical or dental course, in a year the bursary covers, and you normally live in England. If that is you, apply within the 9-month window and your funding should follow.
