Aston University - Aston Sports Scholarship

What the Aston Sports Scholarship gives you

You will receive a one-off payment of up to £500 (about 580 EUR) for the academic year. Every year, Sport Aston awards up to 6 of these scholarships to Aston University students who compete at a high level in their sport. You can spend the money on things that support your sporting career, such as sports equipment, physiotherapy or travel to training sessions and competitions. The grant is valid for one year. You must reapply each year in which you wish to receive the grant.

Who can apply

• University: You are a full-time student at Aston University in Birmingham.
• Admission: You were offered a place at university on the basis of your academic achievements, not because of sport.
• Sporting level: You take part in competitions in your sport at district level or an equivalent level (U18, U21 or senior category).
• Recognised sport: Your sport is recognised by British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS), the umbrella organisation for university sport in the United Kingdom.
• Commitment: If you win, you will represent Aston University at the BUCS competitions during your scholarship year.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: All nationalities welcome.

How to apply

Applications are made via an online form, which is only available in August and September each year. The application deadline is in October; the current deadline is Sunday, 11 October 2026. A panel selected by Sport Aston then reviews each application and decides who will receive the award.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is highly selective: you must already be studying at Aston University and competing at district level or higher in a sport recognised by BUCS, so the pool of eligible candidates is small. As up to 6 scholarships are awarded each year to this limited group, a serious competitive athlete who meets the criteria has a genuine chance. Bear in mind that the application form is only available from August to September – so be sure to apply within this short window.
