Crowther Fund bursary

You will receive a one-off grant of around 1,260 EUR to build on your degree from the Open University. The money can be used for further study, a research project or voluntary work. It is awarded for one year (from 1 May to 30 April), and you can apply for an extension each year. The Open University in the United Kingdom administers the fund, which is named after Lord Crowther, its first Chancellor. An advisory board decides on the exact amount on a case-by-case basis and will treat your application in confidence.

Who can apply

• Your degree: You have already obtained a degree with distinction from the Open University.
• What it funds: Further studies, research projects or voluntary work building on this qualification. A bachelor’s degree will only be taken into account if it forms part of a postgraduate programme or a work-related degree programme.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• No means test: Your income is irrelevant. You do not need to prove that you are in financial need.
• Reapply yearly: You must submit a new application every year, including to continue receiving the grant.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Open University’s scholarships page. The deadline for applications is 29 February for funding commencing the following May. The Crowther Fund Awards Advisory Board reviews the applications and decides who will receive funding.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a very specific target group: Open University graduates who have graduated with distinction and who wish to further their studies, research or voluntary work. As a result, the pool of applicants is small compared to scholarships advertised more generally. If you clearly fall into this group and have a concrete plan for how you will use the funds, your chances are good.
