What the Bill Whiteley Scholarship gives you

You will receive up to £5,000 per year (about 5,800 EUR), a sum of money that you will never have to repay, for up to four years of your degree. You can spend it as you wish. Elite athletes typically use it for training equipment, better nutrition, entry fees and travel to competitions. The University of Bath awards the scholarship through ‘Team Bath’, its sports programme, and awards two of these scholarships each year. You will not receive any payments during a paid work placement (a work-based semester).

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Bath in the UK.
• Degree: You are in the first year of a full-time, face-to-face Bachelor’s degree programme lasting at least three years.
• Field of study: Your degree programme is part of the School of Management, the Faculty of Engineering and Design, the Faculty of Natural Sciences or the Department of Economics.
• Nationality: You are a British student who is eligible for UK funding.
• Sport: You are a recognised elite athlete in any sport and are able to represent the university at competitions.
• Coach backing: A coach from the University of Bath, your personal trainer or a representative of the national governing body will draw up a detailed recommendation for you.
• Clean record: You are currently subject to neither an anti-doping ban nor any disciplinary measures under the University’s regulations.

How to apply

Applications are made via Team Bath’s sports scholarship scheme, under which both the general criteria for the ‘Breakthrough Scholarship’ and the sport-specific criteria are assessed. Both scholarships are awarded once a year. How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly sought-after: only two scholarships are awarded each year, and applicants must combine sporting excellence with a place on one of the eligible degree programmes at Bath. Whilst this keeps the field of applicants small, it also makes it highly competitive. If you are already competing at a high level and studying an eligible subject, your prospects are realistic. A compelling, well-reasoned recommendation from your coach is what sets applicants apart from the rest.
