Bristol Cathedral Organ Scholarship

You will be awarded a scholarship of GBP 90 per year to play the organ at Bristol Cathedral whilst studying at the University of Bristol. The scholarship is renewed annually for up to three years, so it generally covers the duration of a Bachelor’s degree. You will retain it as long as you maintain good academic performance and fulfil your duties. As the cathedral’s organ student, you will play at regular rehearsals and services. These usually consist of ‘Evensong’ (the sung evening service) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and either Thursdays or Fridays, as well as on some weekends by arrangement. You may practise on the cathedral organ and, subject to availability, on the University’s four organs. The St Thomas Trust funds the scholarship, and the University’s Faculty of Music administers it.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the University of Bristol or are planning to study there.
• Degree level: You are an undergraduate student. Your subject of study is irrelevant; you do not necessarily have to be studying music.
• Church music knowledge: You are familiar with the liturgical and musical traditions of the Church of England.
• Playing ability: You have an excellent command of the organ. The audition comprises two pieces (one by J. S. Bach and one of your choice), sight-singing, transposition, playing from vocal scores, improvisation and a short choral rehearsal with accompaniment.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Apply for a place via the standard UCAS route. Please also contact the Music Director at Bristol Cathedral regarding the scholarship. The application deadline is 31 January of the year in which you wish to commence your studies, with the post commencing in October of the same year. Selection will be based on an interview and an organ audition.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective: it is awarded to a single organ pupil at a single cathedral, so the field of applicants is small but the standards are high. You must be able to play well and be familiar with the Church of England’s order of service. If you are a skilled organist with a knowledge of cathedral music and apply by the January deadline, your chances are good. Few candidates possess both the playing ability and the background in church music.
