About this scholarship

What the Care Leavers Bursary gives you

You will receive approximately 2,350 EUR per year (2,000 GBP), which is paid for the entire duration of your studies, i.e. for up to three years. This amount is awarded in addition to any other grants or scholarships, so it will not reduce the amount of your other financial support. The University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom pays this grant to help students who have grown up in the care of local authorities.

Who can apply

  • Care background: You have spent at least three months in the care of the local authority, which means that the state – and not your family – was legally responsible for you. You can provide evidence of this from an official source, such as your local authority.
  • University: You are undertaking a full-time bachelor’s degree at the University of Plymouth, including NHS-funded healthcare programmes. Foundation courses at partner universities do not count towards this.
  • Study phase: You are a first-year student and do not yet hold a university degree.
  • Residence: You live in the United Kingdom.
  • Financial need: You are entitled to the full maintenance allowance, and your household income is less than 40,000 GBP (approximately 47,000 EUR).
  • Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined: you must have worked in nursing, be studying full-time at this particular university, and meet a strict income threshold. As a result, the pool of eligible applicants remains small, meaning that only a few people are competing for the scholarship. If you clearly meet these conditions and can provide evidence of your background in nursing, your chances are good.
