About this scholarship

What you get

For each year of your undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, you will receive up to about 9,750 EUR per year (£8,350), which you will never have to repay. This is the higher rate of the Cambridge Scholarship. Other students taking part in this programme receive up to £3,500 per year, but those who grew up in care receive the higher rate. In addition to the funding, you will receive a free academic gown at the start of your studies, free hire of a hood, and a photo package at the graduation ceremony. You can also keep your student accommodation throughout the year, including for up to 10 weeks after you graduate.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are studying at the University of Cambridge.
  • Care background: You are a former child in care. This means that you were previously in the care of a local authority – for example, in a foster family, in a children’s home, with relatives under a formal arrangement, or at home under supervision – and that you have since left that care.
  • Field of study: Any subject.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Household income: Your family’s income affects how much you receive.

How to apply

There is no separate form. You will automatically be considered if you apply to Student Finance and provide details of your income. You do not need to take out the loan to receive the grant. The university will contact you directly regarding the academic gown and the additional accommodation costs. Please ensure that your dependency status is noted on your application to Student Finance so that you receive the correct rate.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition that you can lose out on against other applicants. It is an entitlement. If you are a Bachelor’s student at Cambridge, are classified as a former resident at a hall of residence, and your income is assessed by ‘Student Finance’, you will automatically receive the increased rate.
