About this scholarship

Charles Letts Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

You will receive a one-off grant of up to about 2,400 EUR (up to £2,000) to fund a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science and Technology at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom. This grant is aimed at students who require financial support to study subjects such as shipbuilding, marine engineering or other degree programmes in the field of marine and maritime engineering. The Charles Letts Memorial Fund Committee awards this grant in memory of Charles Letts.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are a Bachelor’s student or are about to start your degree.
  • Field of study: You are taking a technology course at the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Technology.
  • University: You’re studying at Newcastle University in the UK.
  • Financial need: You can prove that you need financial support to fund your studies.
  • Student loan: You have applied for the full amount of the government student loan.

How to apply

You should submit a brief application to the university. This should include a cover letter explaining your financial difficulties and setting out why you have chosen this degree programme, a CV of no more than two pages, and proof that you are eligible for a student loan. The application deadline is 14 November each year.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is very limited. It is aimed exclusively at students on a degree programme in the field of marine engineering at a specific university who can also demonstrate a genuine financial need. This keeps the number of applicants small. If you clearly meet the academic requirements and can prove your financial need, your chances are good. Provide a detailed explanation of why you need this support.
