University of Exeter - Choral Scholarship at The Church of St Michael and All Angels, Exeter

What you get

You will sing in the choir of St Michael & All Angels in Mount Dinham, a church situated just a short walk from the University of Exeter campus. As a choral scholar, you will receive a stipend for your singing. The exact amount is agreed with the music team, with approximately 83 EUR given as a guide. The scholarship is for one academic year and may be extended. Many scholars have stayed on for three to five years. You will also lead one section of the small choir, take on solo and semi-choir parts, and help manage the choir’s music library. The repertoire includes Gregorian chant, Renaissance polyphony, Baroque, Romantic and contemporary works sung in the Anglo-Catholic tradition.

Who can apply

• Who it's for: You are a student or a graduate. The ‘Senior Choral Scholars’ are usually students at the University of Exeter.
• Singing ability: You can sing from sheet music – that is, you can sing from sheet music at first sight – and you have already sung in a choir.
• Field of study: Every subject. In the past, scholars studied mathematics, classical philology and the humanities.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Age: No age limit.
• Commitment: You take part in the rehearsals on Tuesday (7:00–8:30) and at Sunday Mass (from 10:00), as well as at monthly Vespers and on feast days during term time.
• Safeguarding: Within three months of taking up your post, you must complete the Church of England’s child protection training (Level C0).

How to apply

Please send an expression of interest by email to the music team or the church council. You will then arrange an interview and an audition, and work together to set your timetable. The church is currently accepting applications for the academic year 2026–27.

How realistic are your chances?

It is a small choir that accepts only a handful of scholarship students, so places are limited. The pool of applicants is also small: you’ll need genuine choral experience, solid sight-reading skills and, ideally, a connection to Exeter. If you’re a confident singer who can commit to the weekly schedule on Tuesdays and Sundays, get in touch early and take part in the audition. Your chances are good.
