Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Incentive Scholarship

You will receive £500 per year (about 580 EUR) for the entire duration of your degree. For a standard three-year degree programme, the total amount is approximately £1,500 (approx. 1,740 EUR). The money is a grant, not a loan, so you will never have to pay it back. It is provided by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, the national body that promotes the study of Welsh at universities across Wales, and rewards you for undertaking part of your degree in Welsh.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are starting a degree at a university in Wales, for example at the University of South Wales.
• Timing: Your degree programme begins in September or October of the year in which you apply; this information is therefore intended for first-year students.
• Welsh-language study: You must complete at least 33% of your degree programme (40 credits per year) in Welsh. You can check whether your degree programme meets the requirements using the Coleg’s online degree programme search tool.
• Field of study: Any topic, provided that at least 33% of the content is available in Welsh.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be made via the online form on the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol website. The form is available in Welsh only, in line with the course requirements. The application deadline for 2026/27 is 3 November 2026 at 12:00.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very specific: you must be a first-year student at a university in Wales and undertake a significant proportion of your studies in Welsh. As a result, the number of people eligible for this grant is small. Unlike some of the Coleg’s other scholarships, this one is not tied to a specific subject or degree programme. If you clearly meet the requirements regarding your Welsh language proficiency and apply before the deadline, your chances are good.
