Coventry University Sports Scholarship

Depending on your performance level, you will receive either £1,500 (about 1,750 EUR) or £3,000 (about 3,500 EUR) per academic year. Half of this will be paid to you in cash. The other half will be used to fund services that support your training. Performance level 1 (£1,500) is aimed at athletes competing at a high regional or national level. Level 2 (£3,000) is aimed at those who compete at a high national or international level. The funding covers physiotherapy, sports psychology, nutritional advice, fitness coaching, one-to-one mentoring (regular support from an experienced adviser) and a flexible timetable that balances your training with your studies. You will also receive sports kit: a T-shirt, a jacket and a pair of training trousers. Coventry University awards around 40 to 45 of these scholarships each year, and you can reapply in subsequent years provided your grades meet the requirements.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at Coventry University or have been offered a place on an eligible degree programme there. Preparatory courses in art and design, foundation programmes, first-year preparatory courses and degree programmes at partner universities are not included.
• Level of study: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
• Sporting standard: You take part in national or international competitions and can provide evidence of this, for example through letters of invitation, results, rankings or match records.
• Your sport: The sport must feature on the list of university sports (BUCS) or the list of Olympic or Paralympic sports. This includes motor sport as well as football refereeing at level 4 or higher.
• Commitment: You are willing to represent the university on a regular basis. You will need to sign a contract authorising the university to use your image and committing you to taking part in a number of media events.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Field of study: Anyone can apply.

How to apply

Please complete the official application form and attach a personal statement of between 300 and 500 words outlining your goals. You will also need a letter of recommendation from your coach or your sports association. Please then email all documents to the Sports Scholarships Office. There are six application deadlines per year, depending on when your studies begin, from 31 August (studies beginning in September) to 4 July of the following summer. You will be notified of the decision by email once the relevant deadline has passed.

How realistic are your chances?

The scholarship is competitive but highly targeted. With only 40 to 45 places available and the mandatory requirement to demonstrate genuine national or international excellence in one of the listed sports, the pool of candidates is limited to serious athletes. If you can clearly demonstrate this level of achievement and enrol on an eligible degree programme at Coventry, your chances are good. A convincing, documented track record of achievement is worth more than a polished personal statement – so make sure you gather your admission offers and results well in advance.
