University of Ulster - Gender, Conflict & Human Rights Scholarship

What the TJI Scholarship gives you

You will receive a one-off payment of about 201 EUR (GBP 1,000) to cover the tuition fees for a one-year Master’s degree in Law at Ulster University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Transitional Justice Institute (TJI) at Ulster University awards this scholarship to one student each year. You can undertake it either as part of the LLM programme in ‘Gender, Conflict and Human Rights’ (now renamed ‘Gender and Human Rights’) or the LLM programme in ‘Human Rights Law and Transitional Justice’. An LLM is a Master of Laws programme comprising taught modules. You can complete the programme either full-time in 12 months or part-time over a longer period.

Who can apply

• Course: You are applying for one of the two TJI Master’s programmes: ‘Gender and Human Rights’ (formerly ‘Gender, Conflict and Human Rights’) or ‘Human Rights Law and Transitional Justice’.
• Degree: You must hold a university degree with a ‘Second Class Honours’ (2:2) or higher in law, social sciences, the humanities or a related subject. In some cases, relevant professional or life experience may be accepted as an equivalent qualification.
• English: You achieved a total IELTS score of 6.0, with no individual test score below 5.5, or an equivalent result.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The prize is open to both British and international students.
• Age: No age limit.

How to apply

First, apply to the LLM programme via Ulster University. You should then submit a separate application for the TJI scholarship. The deadline for applications for the scholarship is 30 June. The TJI management and the Head of the LLM programme will jointly select the scholarship recipient. If there is no suitable candidate in a given year, the scholarship may not be awarded at all.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an individual scholarship awarded to one student per year, exclusively for two specific degree programmes in the field of human rights law at a university. The pool of eligible applicants is small, but competition is nevertheless fierce due to there being only one place available. If you clearly meet the requirements regarding the degree 2:2 and English language proficiency, and your studies focus on gender and human rights, your prospects are good. Please note that the amount is modest and is intended to contribute towards tuition fees rather than providing full funding.
