Hatfield Choral Scholarships

Singing in the Hatfield College Chapel Choir at the University of Durham in England earns you 116 EUR (£100) per year. Eight of these choir scholarships are awarded each year. The choir is one of the best in Durham and performs regularly at well-known venues, most recently at St Paul’s Cathedral, St George’s Chapel in Windsor and Westminster Abbey. Funding is provided by the Hatfield Trust and the college’s Senior Common Room, which are financed by Hatfield alumni and friends.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at Hatfield College, Durham University.
• The choir: You sing in the Hatfield College Chapel choir and secured your place by auditioning.
• When: You are already a registered student and are no longer applying for a place at university.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Degree level: Open to students at all levels.
• Nationality: All nationalities welcome.
• Financial need: There is no income limit. Eligibility for the allowance does not depend on how much you or your family earn.

How to apply

Applications are accepted once a year and involve an interview and an audition. A panel chaired by the college chaplain decides, in consultation with the choir director, who is offered a place. The college informs students of the application deadlines in advance.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is very selective: you must be a student at Hatfield College and secure a place in the chapel choir by auditioning, which is why very few people apply. If you sing to a good standard and are already studying at Hatfield College, your chances are good. The amount is small, so it should be seen more as recognition for a convincing audition than as genuine financial support.
