University of Kent - Martin Cook Scholarship

What you get

You will receive £3,000 per year (about 3,480 EUR) for the entire duration of your degree programme, usually 3 or 4 years, provided you achieve satisfactory academic results. The University of Kent funds the scholarship from a donation made in memory of Martin Cook. It is awarded each year to a full-time undergraduate student studying humanities. In return, you will act as an ‘ambassador’ for the University, which means that you will attend University events upon request, provided these do not clash with your lectures.

Who can apply

• Level: You are starting a full-time bachelor’s degree programme and are not yet a student at Kent.
• Field of study: You’re studying the humanities.
• University: You have accepted a place at the University of Kent.
• Residence: You are based in the UK and pay home tuition fees.
• Financial need: You have submitted an application to ‘Student Finance England’, the UK body responsible for assessing your household income, and have been assessed as eligible for funding.
• Grades: Your A-level results (or equivalent qualifications), your UCAS personal statement and your school report will be taken into account in the decision-making process.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via KentVision, the University’s online portal. You must submit a personal statement of no more than 500 words, in which you explain why you wish to study at the University of Kent and how the scholarship would help you to do so. The application deadline for the September intake of the same year is 30 June.

How realistic are your chances?

As only one scholarship is awarded each year, competition is fierce. However, the eligibility criteria are very narrow: you must be a first-year humanities student at the University of Kent, in the ‘home fee’ category and in receipt of confirmed student finance, which excludes many applicants. If you clearly fit this profile and can back this up with outstanding academic performance and a compelling 500-word personal statement, your chances are good.
