About this scholarship
Bangor University Sports Scholarship
You will receive up to about 3,450 EUR per year (up to £3,000) to help you take part in competitions and train whilst you are studying. The funding is provided on a cost-reimbursement basis: you pay the competition or training costs yourself initially and are then reimbursed up to the annual ceiling. Bangor University in Wales awards this funding in recognition of outstanding sporting achievements. It is granted for up to 36 months.
Who can apply
- University: You are studying at Bangor University or are applying via UCAS (the central application service for higher education in the United Kingdom) for a place on a first-year degree programme.
- Study level: Bachelor’s and Master’s students in every year of study.
- Field of study: Any subject.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Your sport: Any sport. You take part in competitions at European, Commonwealth or world level.
- Performance: You are likely to finish on the podium or score points at the relevant BUCS championship. BUCS is the national league for university sport in the UK.
- No big sponsorship: They do not currently receive any significant commercial sponsorship or prize money.
- Clean record: You have not committed any disciplinary offences or doping offences in any sport.
Preference is given to athletes who can represent the university at BUCS competitions. If you compete internationally in a sport outside the BUCS, you may still apply.
How to apply
Applications must be made via the online form. First-year students applying via UCAS must submit their application by 31 March of the year in which they are due to start their degree. Students returning to university or those starting their studies late must submit their application by 31 October of the current academic year. A sports scholarship committee decides on the award of scholarships; its decision is final.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is granted strictly on the basis of merit: you must be a genuine competitor at European, Commonwealth or world-class level, so the pool of eligible candidates is small. If you clearly meet this standard and can represent Bangor in BUCS competitions, your chances are good. An impeccable track record and the absence of major sponsorship deals are essential requirements; so please check both before you apply.
