About this scholarship
St Nicholas Scholarship
You will receive 2,900 EUR (£2,500) per year, which will be paid directly to you throughout your Bachelor’s degree at Durham University in England. The funding comes from the St Nicholas Educational Trust, which supports students from Newcastle who are studying in Durham. Two of these scholarships are awarded each year.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are starting a full-time bachelor’s degree at Durham University. The subject area is irrelevant.
- Where you live: You live in one of the 26 boroughs of Newcastle City Council if you are applying to Durham University via UCAS.
- Household income: Your household income is below £42,875 (approximately 49,700 EUR), as verified by Student Finance England. If your household income is below £25,000 (approximately 29,000 EUR), you will be given priority.
- Education so far: From the age of 16 until the date of your application, you have been in full-time education without any significant breaks. Breaks due to illness may be taken into account.
How to apply
First, apply to Durham University via UCAS by the UCAS deadline (14 January 2026 for the start of the academic year in 2026). You must then submit the separate scholarship application by 25 March 2026. You will need your decision from Student Finance England and a letter of recommendation from a teacher. You will find out the result at the end of May 2026.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must live in certain districts of Newcastle, have a low household income and be starting a degree at Durham – so the target group is small. As only two scholarships are awarded each year, competition is fierce. However, if you clearly meet the residence and income criteria – particularly if your household income is below £25,000, – your chances are good. A convincing personal statement and a teacher’s reference are crucial.
