What the Mathematics Gibbs Prize gives you

For outstanding examination results and academic achievement during your mathematics degree at University of Oxford, you will receive a one-off cash prize of up to about 580 EUR (approximately £500). Smaller prizes start at around 170 EUR (approximately £150), depending on which prize you win. Several mathematics prizes cover different stages of your degree, including Part A, Part B, Part C, the final dissertation, and the examinations in mathematics and philosophy. Charles D. D. Gibbs established the prizes. They are merit-based awards for good academic results, not a monthly scholarship or a living allowance.

Who can win it

• University: You are studying at the University of Oxford.
• Degree: You are following an ‘Honour School’ programme, a bachelor’s degree programme at Oxford which culminates in public examinations.
• Field of study: You’re studying mathematics, including mathematics and philosophy.
• Results: You have achieved outstanding examination and performance results. Should no candidate meet the required standards in a particular year, the examiners may decide not to award a prize.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may be considered. The prize is open to all students at the University of Oxford who are enrolled on the relevant degree programme.

How to win it

You do not need to apply. The examiners award the prizes automatically based on your examination and performance results, unless otherwise stated for a particular prize. Prizes are currently available for 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

As this is an award for academic achievement presented to the very best students, you can only influence your own results. There is a separate prize for each part of the degree and for the final dissertation, meaning that more than one student can be recognised each year. However, each prize is still awarded to the best in its category. If you are consistently among the top maths students in your year at Oxford, this prize is well within your reach.
