What the Part-time Fee Grant covers

You will receive a grant that you will never have to repay. It covers some or all of the tuition fees for a part-time bachelor’s degree programme in Scotland. The amount depends on how many credits you are taking and the degree you are studying for; it is therefore a pro-rata payment, which may not cover the full tuition fees. SAAS pays the amount directly to your higher education institution, not to you. The grant is provided by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS), the Scottish Government agency responsible for funding tuition fees. It does not cover living costs.

Who can apply

• Where you live: You normally live in Scotland and meet the SAAS residence requirements.
• Income: Your own annual pre-tax income is no more than £25,000,, including bonuses and overtime.
• Course size: You are taking between 30 and 119 SCQF credits per year, i.e. at least 30, but fewer than a full-time course.
• Course level: Your degree programme is a Bachelor’s degree programme at SCQF levels 7 to 10, from the first year of the Bachelor’s programme through to the Honours programme.
• Study mode: You are studying part-time on campus or online, or you are undertaking a full-time online degree programme at undergraduate level. For purely online degree programmes, this grant is the only SAAS funding available.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.

How to apply

You apply for funding directly online via SAAS at saas.gov.uk, not through your university. You should submit a new application for each academic year as soon as possible after registering with SAAS. SAAS will then check the number of credits you have earned with your university before paying out the funding.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a means-tested grant, but an entitlement. If you meet the residence requirement, the income limit of £25,000 and the creditworthiness criteria, you will receive the grant. Your chances depend on whether you meet these criteria – not on outperforming other applicants. Check your income details and debt levels carefully and submit your application early each year.
