Sir Frank Bowling Scholarships

You will receive about 17,032 EUR (14,600 GBP) as a contribution towards your tuition fees for the entire duration of your Master’s programme in ‘Fine Art’, which normally lasts two years. The amount will be paid directly into the university’s tuition fee account and will therefore be deducted from your fees, rather than being paid out to you in cash. Two of these scholarships are awarded each year. They were established by the artist and Chelsea graduate Sir Frank Bowling OBE RA to support postgraduate art students at Chelsea College of Arts.

Who can apply

• Course: You have been admitted to the full-time Master’s programme in ‘Fine Art’ at Chelsea College of Arts, which is part of the University of the Arts London.
• Where you study: You’re studying at the Chelsea College of Arts campus in London.
• Fee status: You are considered a ‘domestic student’, which means that the university will charge you the UK domestic tuition fee rather than the higher fee for international students.
• Financial need: You need help paying your fees.
• Grades: You have an excellent academic record.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the UAL applicant portal on the ‘my funding’ page. Places are allocated on the basis of financial need and academic merit. The 2025/26 round has now closed, and a deadline for the next intake has not yet been announced.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is very limited: only two scholarships are awarded each year, and these are granted exclusively to students paying the ‘home fee’ who have already been admitted to a specific Master’s programme at a college. Although this means the pool of eligible applicants is small, you are applying directly for one of the two places. If you clearly meet the criteria for ‘home fee’ status, can demonstrate genuine financial need and have a strong academic record, your prospects are good.
