What the full fee waiver scholarships give you

These scholarships at Bangor University in Wales cover your full tuition fees for a full-time Master’s programme, meaning you pay nothing for the programme itself. ‘Full fee waiver’ means that the university covers 100% of your tuition fees. Bangor lists several such programmes for international students, which together are worth over £1 million. The two scholarships administered by Bangor University itself are the ‘Refugee Scholarship’ and the ‘Chevening Partnership’. The “Refugee Scholarship” also covers a place in one of the university’s halls of residence. The “Chevening Scholarship”, funded by the UK government, includes, in addition to the tuition fee waiver, return flights and a monthly living allowance.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You will be starting a full-time, on-campus Master’s degree programme at the Bangor campus.
• Field of study: Any subject offered as a Master’s degree programme with lectures.
• Grades: You have achieved very good results, equivalent to the standard of a British bachelor’s degree.
• Refugee Scholarship: You have refugee status or humanitarian protection in the United Kingdom, pay the UK ‘domestic’ tuition fees and do not receive full funding from other sources. Only one place is awarded per round.
• Chevening Scholarship: You are from one of the more than 160 eligible countries (excluding the USA, Afghanistan, the United Kingdom and EU countries) and can demonstrate leadership potential. Every year, more than 1,500 Chevening scholarships are awarded worldwide.

How to apply

To apply for the refugee scholarship, you must first obtain an offer of admission from Bangor University. You should then submit the scholarship application form via the Bangor University website by 30 May. To apply for the Chevening Scholarship, apply directly via the Chevening website between 5 August and 7 October (12:00 UTC). You should only apply to Bangor University once you have reached the interview stage.

How realistic are your chances?

The ‘Refugee Scholarship’ awards only one place per round, so the pool of applicants is very small. However, you must have clear refugee status or be entitled to humanitarian protection in the United Kingdom and be eligible to pay home tuition fees. Chevening is a world-renowned programme with thousands of applicants, so competition is fierce and your leadership experience plays just as important a role as your academic grades. Choose a programme whose requirements are a perfect fit for you, and apply early.
