Vice-Chancellor's Discretionary Fund

You will receive a one-off grant of up to about 3,500 EUR (up to £3,000) if you are studying at the University of London and find yourself in financial difficulty. This is a hardship fund, not a reward for good grades. It is designed to help you cover additional costs that you are unable to meet from any other source, such as an unexpected bill or a problem with your accommodation. You do not have to repay this grant. The fund is administered by the University of London and is financed by donations dating back to the year 1946.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are a student at the University of London or at its School of Advanced Study.
• Financial need: You are in genuine financial difficulty and have no other way of covering the additional costs.
• Field of study: Open to all disciplines.
• Level and mode: Open to all degree programmes and modes of study, regardless of your fee status.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• How often: As a rule, one application per year. In particularly serious cases, a second application is permitted.

How to apply

You apply via your own school or department, which will handle the application on your behalf, rather than directly to the university’s scholarship office. There is no fixed deadline, so you can apply at any time during the academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

As this is an emergency fund, it is not competition that is the deciding factor, but whether you can clearly demonstrate that you are in a genuine financial emergency. If you are studying at the University of London and can demonstrate that you have no other means of covering the necessary additional costs, your chances are good. As there is no application deadline, you should submit your application as soon as the emergency arises, rather than waiting.
