The Stoneygate Award

You will receive about EUR 3,510 per year (£3,000) as a grant towards your living costs, which will be paid out over the entire duration of your studies. The total grant amounts to approximately 10,500 euros (£9,000): for a three-year degree programme, this is £3,000 per year; for a four-year degree programme, it is £2,250 per year. The money is intended to cover living costs such as rent and food, not to pay tuition fees, and does not need to be repaid. It is provided by the Stoneygate Trust via the University of Nottingham, which awards three of these scholarships in each round of awards.

Who can apply

• University: In autumn 2025, you will begin the first year of your Bachelor’s degree at the University of Nottingham (UK campus).
• First degree: This is your first bachelor’s degree.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Residence: Your funding status is ‘Home’. This means that you have lived in the United Kingdom for at least three years prior to the start of your studies. Refugees and migrant workers from the EU may also meet these criteria.
• Household income: According to Student Finance’s assessment, your household income 2023/24 is between £0 and £35,000,.
• No other sponsor: You do not receive any funding for your studies from the NHS, nor do you receive any support from an employer or industry. University scholarships and government grants are permitted.
• Barriers overcome: You live in a region where few people go to university (the most disadvantaged 10% postcode areas), or you have received free school meals. This is a key criterion.
• Grades: You must have very good grades, with at least ‘ABB’ at A-level or an equivalent qualification such as a BTEC Extended Diploma with a grade of ‘DDM’.
• Motivation: You are actively involved in activities outside your studies, for example through voluntary work, in leadership roles, in sport or in music. You can explain how this award will benefit your studies and your career.

How to apply

Please complete the online application form. You will be asked to provide your examination results and a personal statement of motivation. The application deadline for the September intake is 1 July. All applicants will receive the outcome by email within four weeks of the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

As only three scholarships are awarded per round, competition for a single, highly funded scholarship such as this is fierce. However, the criteria are quite specific: you must be a new undergraduate student at the University of Nottingham from a low-income household, who also comes from a region with low university participation rates or was entitled to free school meals. If you clearly fit this profile, have the required grades and can demonstrate that you are actively involved in extracurricular activities, your chances are good.
