Materials Gibbs Prize

For the best overall performance in the first part of the Materials Science degree programme at the University of Oxford, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 920 EUR (£800). The first part is the examination phase which Materials Science students undertake in the third year of the four-year MEng degree programme. The prize is funded by a trust established by Charles D. D. Gibbs and is awarded annually by the Department of Materials Science at the University of Oxford. It is a one-off payment and not a monthly grant.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Programme: You are studying on the ‘Materials Science’ (MEng) Master’s programme.
• Stage: You are currently in Part I, the examination phase of the third year of study.
• Grades: You have the best overall result in Part I when your marks in the modules and the examinations are added together.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The prize is awarded automatically to the best student, based on their performance in the courses and their examination results. If the examiners conclude that no candidate is good enough in a particular year, they may decide not to award the prize.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single prize awarded to the student with the best result in Part I within a small department at Oxford. The pool of candidates is tiny, but the bar is set at the very highest level in your year group. You cannot apply for it or campaign for it: the prize is simply awarded on the basis of your marks. If you are already amongst the best in your year group, it is within your grasp; otherwise, it is beyond your control.
