About this scholarship

William Dickson Travelling Fund

You will receive a one-off travel grant of up to about 1,150 EUR (a maximum of £1,000) to fund a trip abroad for study or research purposes. The University of Edinburgh awards up to three of these grants in each round of funding. You may receive this grant alongside other scholarships or funding, meaning it can supplement your existing funding. The trip must be for study or research purposes and does not necessarily have to form part of a degree programme.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You graduated from the University of Edinburgh.
  • Timing: You graduated no more than three years ago.
  • Field of study: Every subject and every university.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Purpose: Your trip abroad is for study or research purposes and is not a compulsory part of your degree programme.

How to apply

Apply online via the university’s ‘Registry Services’ page. You will also need an academic reference from someone associated with your proposed course of study or research project. If you are already a student, this should be your supervisor or another member of academic staff, who must submit a separate recommendation form. The deadline is Friday, 28 August 2026, at 23:59 British time.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund is very specific: only graduates of the University of Edinburgh who graduated no more than three years ago are eligible to apply, so the target group is small. As up to three scholarships are awarded per round, there is competition, but the pool of applicants is limited. If you clearly meet the criteria, have a solid study or research plan and a convincing academic reference, your prospects are good.
