Arthurian Postgraduate Awards

You will receive £1,500 (about 1,725 EUR) as a one-off grant towards your PhD tuition fees for one year. The money will be paid directly to your university’s finance department, not to you personally. The Eugene Vinaver Memorial Trust awards one or more of these grants each year to support research into King Arthur and the medieval Arthurian tradition. If you are still working on your PhD next year, you may apply again.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are undertaking a doctoral programme (PhD or D.Phil.).
• Field of study: Your research focuses on a topic relating to King Arthur, i.e. everything to do with the legend and the study of King Arthur.
• Where you studied: You have obtained a degree from a university in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland.
• Where you study now: You are studying at any university in the UK or Ireland.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

Please complete the standard application form and email it to the Director of the Trust at the University of Bristol. Your supervisor should send a letter of recommendation at the same time. The application deadline is 1 April each year.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. Applicants must hold a PhD specifically in the field of Arthurian studies from a British or Irish university, which means the pool of eligible candidates is very small. If your research fits into this niche and your supervisor supports you, your chances are good. As this is a small, specialised fund that awards only one or a few scholarships per year, a clear match with the requirements is preferred over a CV covering a wide range of topics.
