University of Sheffield Bursary (regional access award)

You will receive £250 per year (about 290 EUR) for each year of your undergraduate degree, including any years spent studying abroad. This is a grant from the University of Sheffield, which you will never have to repay. Your household income does not matter, so you can still receive this funding even if you earn too much for the means-tested parts of the scheme. The wider scheme can pay up to £1,250 per year (approximately 1,450 EUR), but you will receive either this regional grant or the grant for disadvantaged areas – not both.

Who can apply

• University: You are undertaking a bachelor’s degree programme at the University of Sheffield which is eligible for a bachelor’s grant.
• Fee status: You pay the tuition fees applicable to UK students, not those for international students.
• Student finance: You have applied to Student Finance England (or the relevant body in your region) for a loan to cover your tuition fees and a loan to cover your living costs.
• Where you live: You live in the Sheffield area, in a region where few people are in higher education. Students from Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland are not eligible for this postcode-based funding.
• Grades: You must have achieved a grade of ABB or higher at A-level, or hold an equivalent qualification.
• Field of study: Any subject.

How to apply

You do not need to submit a separate application. The university will check whether you meet the eligibility criteria based on the information you provide to ‘Student Finance England’ and UCAS – usually in October. If you meet the criteria, you will receive a confirmation email once you have started your course.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is very limited. It is aimed exclusively at students from Sheffield who live in specific postcode areas with low participation rates and who have grades of ABB or better. If you meet all three criteria, there is no separate selection process and no fixed quota. The university simply assesses all eligible applicants based on the available data, so your chances are good. The main hurdles are the postcode requirement and your grades.
