Sheffield bursary from the university

You will receive up to 1,250 GBP per year (about 1,450 EUR) from the University of Sheffield. You will never have to repay this amount, and it will be paid to you throughout your studies. The amount depends on your family’s income: 1,000 GBP per year if your household earns 25,000 GBP or less, 500 GBP up to 30,000 GBP, and 250 GBP up to 40,000 GBP. In two cases, you can receive an additional 250 GBP per year. Firstly: your family earns 25,000 GBP or less and you live in one of the most deprived areas of England. Secondly: you live in a part of the Sheffield area where few people go to university, and you have achieved at least ABB at A-level. The money is paid in two instalments per year, the first usually in October or November.

If you find yourself in a particularly difficult situation, you may instead be eligible for a significantly higher allowance of up to 10,000 GBP per year. This applies, for example, if you grew up in care, have no contact with your parents, or are caring for a sick family member.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a Bachelor’s student at the University of Sheffield.
• Fee status: You are considered a fee-paying student from within the UK enrolled on a degree programme that is eligible for funding during the foundation stage of your studies.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Financial need: Your household earns 40,000 GBP a year or less.
• Student finance: You have applied to your national student finance organisation for a tuition fee loan and an income-based living costs loan. If you do not wish to take out a loan, you can request a means test based on a loan amount of 0 GBP so that your grant can still be calculated.

How to apply

You do not need to submit an application for the standard grant. The university will automatically assess your eligibility based on the information you have provided regarding your funding for studies and your UCAS details, and will then notify you by email once your course has started. For the higher grants available to former care home residents, students with no contact with their parents and students providing care, a separate application must be submitted via the student portal.

How realistic are your chances?

The standard grant is not subject to a selection process. If your household income is 40,000 GBP or less and you meet the eligibility criteria for student finance, you will receive it automatically. In essence, funding is guaranteed to eligible applicants. The higher grants of 10,000 GBP are restricted to specific personal circumstances, so only a small number of students are eligible. Those who clearly meet the criteria and can provide evidence of their circumstances have a good chance of being awarded the grant.
