English Language and Literature Gibbs Prize

For outstanding achievement in English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford, you will receive a cash prize of up to £900 (about 1,050 EUR). The amount depends on the category: £900 (approximately 1,050 EUR) for the best overall performance in Course I and the same amount for Course II of the final Honour School, £625 (approx. 730 EUR) for the best dissertation, as well as seven prizes of £325 each (approx. 380 EUR) for further outstanding achievements. A single prize may be shared between two equally deserving candidates. The money comes from a fund established by Charles D. D. Gibbs.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Study phase: You are now in the final examination phase of your Bachelor’s degree (the final ‘Honour School’).
• Field of study: You’re studying English.
• Grades: You’re one of the best. Prizes are awarded for the best performance in coursework and exams. The examiners may not award any prizes in a given year if no one is good enough.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The examiners select the winners on the basis of your academic performance and examination results, unless the call for applications for the relevant subject explicitly asks you to apply.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is awarded to the top graduates of a specific degree programme at Oxford; therefore, only students in the final-year ‘Honour School’ in English are eligible to win it. You cannot apply for it. It is awarded on the basis of the best examination and coursework results, and the examiners may decide not to award it if no one meets the criteria. If your marks place you amongst the top students in your year group, you are automatically in the running.
