Physics Gibbs Prize (University of Oxford)

You will receive a one-off cash prize of roughly EUR 175 to EUR 700 (about £150 to £600), which is awarded for outstanding performance in your physics examinations and coursework during your final year at the University of Oxford. Different amounts are paid depending on your performance. For your performance in the MPhys examination, you can receive around 700 (£600) euros; for the best MPhys research project, around 580 (£500) for the best MPhys research project, and around 320 (£275) euros for the Part A examination. Smaller prizes of around 175 (£150) euros are awarded for practical laboratory work, the best handling of experimental set-ups and the physics public speaking competition. The money comes from a fund established by Charles D. D. Gibbs.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Degree stage: You are in the final year of your Bachelor’s degree, i.e. the year that ends with your final examinations.
• Field of study: You are studying physics, including the dual degree programme in physics and philosophy.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Results: You are among the best in your exams or coursework, as the examiners award the prize to the best students.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The prizes are awarded automatically on the basis of your examination and coursework results. In a year when no student is deemed to have performed well enough, the examiners may decide not to award any prizes.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an achievement award for the very best A-level physics students at Oxford, not an open scholarship. No application is required, and you can only improve your chances through your exam and project results. Only the very best in each category are selected, and the examiners may decide not to award the prize at all. In practice, the rule is: either you are among the very best in your year group, or you do not receive the prize.
