What the Alun Hughes Graduate Scholarship gives you

You will receive your full course fees paid as well as an annual living expenses allowance of up to three years for your PhD studies at Oxford. The amount of the living expenses allowance is not disclosed. It is not intended to cover all your costs; you should therefore plan to combine it with other sources of funding. The funding is provided by Jesus College, Oxford. It is intended to support a DPhil (as the doctoral degree is known at Oxford) in the languages or cultures of Polynesia or Micronesia, the island regions of the central and western Pacific. As a scholarship holder, you will become a member of Jesus College.

Who can apply

• Level: You are starting a PhD (DPhil) programme at the University of Oxford. This offer is not aimed at Master’s students or those already undertaking a degree programme.
• Subject: Your research focuses on the languages or cultures of Polynesia or Micronesia, for example in the fields of anthropology, linguistics or history.
• Where you study: You are studying at Jesus College, University of Oxford.
• Fee status: You are eligible for the tuition fees applicable to UK students (home fee status) and not for the tuition fees applicable to international students.
• Admission: The University of Oxford has admitted you to a PhD programme. The scholarship is linked to this place of study.

How to apply

There is no separate scholarship application form. You should apply for your PhD programme via the standard admissions process for doctoral students at the University of Oxford, ensuring you meet the application deadline in January. The scholarship is awarded as part of this process. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview. This scholarship is not available for students commencing their studies in 2027.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must have ‘Home Fee’ status, a place at Jesus College, Oxford, and a PhD research proposal that focuses specifically on Polynesian or Micronesian languages or cultures. Very few people meet all three criteria. If your research does indeed fit this Pacific focus and you secure a DPhil place at Oxford, your chances of being awarded this named scholarship are good. Please check availability for your intake year, as it is only offered occasionally and was not available for the 2027 intake.
