Edward Hall Memorial Fund bursary

You will receive a one-off grant of up to about 11,500 EUR (£4,000 to £10,000) for your Master’s degree at the University of Oxford. This is a grant towards your tuition fees and living costs, not full funding, so you will probably need additional financial support. The School of Archaeology at Oxford awards two to four of these scholarships each year. They are named after Edward Hall, a pioneer of scientific methods in archaeology at Oxford. Should you receive further funding for your studies at Oxford, the amount of this scholarship may be reduced.

Who can apply

• Course offer: You have been offered a place on the one-year Master’s programme in ‘Archaeological Science’ at Oxford. This programme applies scientific methods to the study of human history.
• Prior study: Your first degree is in archaeology or a natural science subject.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• No separate form: Everyone who has been offered a place will automatically be considered.
• Selection: The scholarships are awarded to the best applicants, with clear motivation, sound reasons for choosing this degree programme and academic ability that meets the requirements being the decisive factors.

How to apply

You do not apply for the scholarship directly. Instead, apply for the ‘Archaeological Science’ Master’s programme via the University of Oxford’s Master’s admissions system by the deadline in January (no later than 20 January). All successful applicants will automatically be considered for the scholarship, and successful candidates will be notified by the end of April.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is highly selective: it is aimed exclusively at individuals who have been admitted to a specific Master’s programme at Oxford, meaning that the pool of eligible candidates is already small and no additional application is required. As two to four scholarships are awarded each year to the best of the admitted applicants, a candidate who can clearly and convincingly demonstrate that they are a good fit for the programme has a genuine chance of success. Securing a place on this highly competitive programme is the greater hurdle.
