What the Adrian Carruthers Memorial Award gives you

The prize will help you make the transition from art college to a career as an artist. You will receive three things: a grant of approximately 6,900 EUR (around £6,000), a free studio at Acme Studios for 12 months from January following your graduation, and a mentoring programme (regular support from an experienced artist) tailored to your own work. This is a partnership between Acme Studios and the Slade School of Fine Art (part of UCL in London), funded by the Adrian Carruthers Memorial Fund in memory of Slade graduate and artist Adrian Carruthers (1961–2001).

Who can apply

• Degree: You are in the final year of the MA or MFA degree programme in Fine Art.
• Where you study: You’re studying at the Slade School of Fine Art at UCL in London. No other university would do.
• Field of study: Fine Art.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

There is no open call for entries. The prize is awarded on a nomination basis and forms part of the Slade’s MA/MFA prizes for graduates. A jury selects a winner each year. The jury for 2024 comprised a representative from Acme and the artist Emma Hart. Please contact the Slade directly for details of the current procedure and timetable.

How realistic are your chances?

As only students who are completing their MA or MFA at the Slade are eligible, the pool of potential entrants is very small. However, as only one winner is selected each year, competition is fierce amongst the art school’s talented graduates. Your chances depend on how much your work impresses the jury.
