About this scholarship

Stephen Instone Studentship for Greek Literature

You will receive up to about 4,600 EUR per year (up to £4,000) as a contribution towards your tuition fees at University College London (UCL). Two scholarships are awarded each year. The amount is paid in October as a credit against your tuition fees; it therefore reduces the amount you have to pay, rather than being paid out to you in cash. The Department of Greek and Latin at UCL awards the prize in memory of Dr Stephen Instone, a UCL classical philologist whose research focused on Greek religion, athletics, Homer and Pindar.

Who can apply

  • University: You’re studying at the Department of Greek and Latin at UCL in London.
  • Level: You are a postgraduate student and are studying for a Master’s degree or a PhD.
  • Field of study: You specialise in Greek literature.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

First, apply to UCL for a postgraduate programme at the Department of Greek and Latin. You should then submit a separate application form for a scholarship from the Department. Both documents must be received by the Department by 30 June. You will be notified in July as to whether you have been awarded the scholarship.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is highly selective. You must already be enrolled as a PhD student in a specific department at UCL and be specialising in Greek literature. Only two scholarships are awarded each year. Whilst this keeps the pool of eligible applicants small, the limit of two places also means that there is genuine competition amongst suitable candidates. If you are enrolled or admitted to the relevant department and apply by the deadline, your chances are good.
