Whitworth Scholarship Awards

You will receive about 11,700 EUR per year (£10,000) for up to four years, amounting to a total of up to approximately 46,900 EUR (£40,000), to undertake a university-level engineering degree in the UK. Part-time or work-study programmes are funded on a pro-rata basis (in line with your study load), and industrial placements are not eligible for funding. The funding comes from the Whitworth Trust Fund, which is administered by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). You may combine this funding with other scholarships, but only one Whitworth scholarship is awarded per person.

Who can apply

• Level of study: You are either just starting an engineering degree (BEng, MEng or MSc) or are already studying for one. To apply for an MSc programme, you must be a recent graduate.
• Field of study: Any field of engineering.
• Nationality: You are a British national, a national of a Commonwealth country or an EU citizen.
• Residence: You have lived in the UK for at least 3 consecutive years immediately prior to the start of your degree programme.
• Practical experience: Before starting your degree, you completed an engineering apprenticeship, which usually lasted for at least 2 years after finishing full-time school.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the online form on the Whitworth Scholarships website by 17 July each year. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This vacancy is very specific. As well as an engineering degree, you’ll need around two years’ practical experience before graduating, which most students coming straight from school do not have. If you take this practical route and can demonstrate both strong academic and practical skills, there will be few applicants who can match you – so your prospects are good. As the interview is compulsory, a clear, well-supported presentation of your qualities counts for more than your application documents.
