Whitworth Scholarship Awards

You will receive £10,000 per year (about 11,500 EUR) for up to 4 years of full-time study in engineering, capped at £40,000 (approximately 46,000 EUR) per person. If you are studying part-time or on a work-study programme, the amount will be paid on a pro rata basis (in line with your study load). The money is paid out each semester. Upon completion of your degree, a committee will assess your academic performance. If your assessment is positive, you will receive a certificate, a medal and the right to use the title ‘Whitworth Scholar’ (WhSch). The scholarship is administered by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which manages the Whitworth Trust Fund. You may combine it with other scholarships, but not with a second Whitworth scholarship.

Who can apply

• Field of study: You are studying an engineering degree in any discipline (mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, etc.) at BEng, MEng or MSc level, or are about to start such a degree.
• Practical route: Before commencing your degree programme, you must have gained at least 2 years’ practical experience in engineering following the completion of your full-time training, for example through an apprenticeship or vocational training. Applicants for the Master’s programme (MSc) must be recent graduates and have relevant practical experience.
• Where you study: Any college or university in the United Kingdom.
• Nationality: You are a British national, a national of a Commonwealth country or a citizen of the European Union.
• Residence: You lived in the UK for at least 3 consecutive years immediately prior to the start of your degree programme.
• Already studying: You can also apply if you have already started an engineering degree.
• Selection: The judging panel places great importance on good grades, practical skills and the qualities required for success in the business world.

How to apply

Please complete the application form and email it, together with your references, to the IMechE. The application deadline is 17 July each year. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview in London in mid-August; the results will be announced the following week.
