Boston Discovery Scholarship

You get 1,500 USD per year (about 1,400 EUR) for each year of your degree, up to four years, so up to 6,000 USD (about 5,500 EUR) in total. On top of the money, you can get mentoring from Ulster University graduates based in Boston, meaning experienced graduates guide and advise you. You also get help finding an internship in the Boston area and networking contacts after you graduate. The award is funded by Boston-based Ulster University graduates through the American Friends of Ulster University.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You study at Ulster University in Northern Ireland.
• Discovery Scholar Programme: You took part in Ulster University's Discovery Scholar Programme (formerly Step-Up). This scheme helps school pupils from disadvantaged areas move towards university.
• Background: You come from a disadvantaged background. You went to a school where at least 40% of pupils qualify for free school meals.
• Field of study: Any subject. Past recipients studied law, engineering and business.

How to apply

There is no public application form. The scholarship goes to Discovery Scholar Programme participants who then study at Ulster University. Contact Ulster University for details.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut very narrowly. You must have gone through Ulster University's Discovery Scholar Programme and then enrolled at the university, so the eligible group is small. Only about nine students have been supported since 2004, which points to one recipient at a time. If you clearly fit these conditions, you are among a small number of candidates, but places are very limited.
