Wheatley Foundation Bursaries

You get a grant of up to £1,500 per year (about 1,750 EUR) if you study full time, or up to £750 per year (about 875 EUR) if you study part time. It is a bursary, so you never pay it back. It also does not reduce your Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) support or your housing benefit. The money helps cover the cost of a college or university course: an HNC or HND (Scottish further-education certificates and diplomas), a bachelor's degree or a postgraduate qualification such as a master's. The Wheatley Foundation runs the programme. It is the charitable trust of the Wheatley Group, Scotland's largest social housing provider, and has supported nearly 500 people since 2016.

Who can apply

• Where you live: You, or a family member you live with, rent a home from one of Wheatley's social landlords: Wheatley Homes Glasgow, Wheatley Homes East, Wheatley Homes South or Loretto Housing. Homes factored by or rented from Lowther also count. These landlords cover Scotland's Central Belt and Dumfries and Galloway.
• Course: You are studying, or about to study, for an HNC, HND, undergraduate degree or postgraduate qualification.
• Study mode: Full-time and part-time study both qualify, at different grant levels.
• Field of study: Any subject is open to you.

How to apply

You apply through an online form. The programme opens for applications once a year, and staff at the Wheatley Foundation assess each application against a set of criteria. If you need adjustments during the process, or documents in large print, braille or another format, the Foundation can arrange this.

How realistic are your chances?

This bursary is cut very narrowly. Only Wheatley tenants and their families in a defined part of Scotland can apply, so the pool is small compared with open scholarships. If you rent from one of the named landlords and are enrolled on a qualifying course, your prospects are good. Only a limited number of grants are given each year, so apply as soon as the yearly window opens.
