About this scholarship

What the Student Support Fund gives you

You get a one-off grant you never pay back if you hit sudden money trouble while studying at the University of Greater Manchester (formerly the University of Bolton). There is no fixed amount. The university works out your sum from your income and spending across the academic year. It also depends on whether you study full or part time, and whether you are an undergraduate or postgraduate. The money goes straight into your bank account. The first payment arrives within 10 working days of your approval letter. This is emergency help, not a general living grant, and you cannot use it for tuition fees (those go through Student Finance England).

Who can apply

  • University: You are enrolled at the University of Greater Manchester, as an undergraduate or postgraduate.
  • Student loan first: You have applied for your full student loan and already received the first instalment.
  • Financial need: You are in sudden money trouble and can prove it with bank statements and a record of your income and essential spending.
  • Field of study: All subjects can apply.
  • Nationality and age: Any nationality, any age. The fund is open to all enrolled students in hardship.
  • Priority groups: You get priority if you have children, are in your final year, or cannot work because of a long-term illness or disability (with proof).

How to apply

You apply online through the Blackbullion platform and upload evidence of your income and spending. Applications are handled in date order while the money lasts, so apply early. A complete application is assessed within 28 working days. If you are in your final year, apply at least four weeks before your course ends.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a hardship fund, not a prize for good grades. What counts is a clear, well-documented case of genuine financial need. Being eligible does not guarantee a payment: the yearly budget is fixed and can run out, and applications are handled first come, first served. If you fit a priority group, apply early in the year and submit full evidence, your prospects are good.
