About this award / prize

Clare Winsten Memorial Award

You will receive a one-off grant of about 11,800 EUR (£10,000) to fund an ambitious artistic project. This grant is awarded each year to a female artist at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Use the money for a significant creative project, such as a drawing trip, a period abroad or a new body of work. You must not use it for day-to-day expenses such as rent or living costs. The grant comes from a bequest left to UCL in her will by Clare Winsten, a Romanian-born artist who studied at the Slade herself, to support women in building their careers as young artists.

Who can apply

  • Gender: You are an artist.
  • Where you study: You are a graduate or a final-year student at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, in London.
  • Nationality: You are a student from the UK or a graduate of the Slade.
  • Field of study: You’re studying Fine Art (Art and Design) at the Slade.
  • Timing: You will be selected following your final exhibition – that is, the exhibition of your work at the end of your degree.

How to apply

There is no application form. Each year, the Slade Prize Committee, which is made up of senior staff at the college, selects the winner from the works on display at the students’ final exhibition.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is awarded on a highly selective basis. Each year, it is awarded to a single female artist who is graduating from one of the participating universities and is selected internally on the basis of the works featured in her final-year exhibition. The pool of candidates is small, but the standard is high. It is not possible to apply directly, so the quality of the work you present in your final exhibition is your strongest selling point. If your artistic work stands out from the rest there, you have a real chance of winning the prize.
