About this award / prize

Benefit

You will receive a one-off prize of about 120 EUR as well as an award from the Department of Chemistry at UCL. The prize recognises outstanding achievements in physical chemistry, that is, the study of the behaviour of matter at the level of atoms and energy, including topics such as thermodynamics and quantum mechanics. The Department awards the prize once a year to one of its Bachelor’s students in Chemistry. It is named after Harry Poole, a long-serving member of staff who taught quantum mechanics and thermodynamics from the 1930s onwards.

Eligibility

  • Level: You are a Bachelor’s student studying chemistry.
  • University: You’re studying at University College London (UCL).
  • Subject: Your award-winning work focuses on physical chemistry.
  • Performance: Compared with your fellow students in your year group, you stand out for your outstanding achievements in physical chemistry.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

There is no need to submit an application. The Department of Physical Chemistry selects the best student itself, so there is no need to fill in a form. The decisive factors are your academic performance and examination results for the whole year.

How realistic are your chances?

The pool of candidates is small and is limited to Bachelor’s students studying chemistry at UCL. As only one student wins the prize each year, it is awarded to the clear frontrunner in the field of physical chemistry.
