About this award / prize

The Henry Tonks Prize

You have won an annual prize for outstanding achievement in drawing at the Slade School of Fine Art, which is part of University College London (UCL). It is one of the Slade School’s smaller ‘Sessional Prizes’ – a modest one-off cash award intended to recognise achievement rather than serving as a monthly scholarship. The exact amount is not disclosed. The prize dates back to 1937 and honours Henry Tonks, the school’s most influential drawing teacher.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You’re studying at the Slade School of Fine Art at UCL in London.
  • Level: All qualifications are recognised, from BA and BFA right through to MA and MFA.
  • Field: You’re studying Fine Art, specialising in drawing.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Achievement: You’ve produced some impressive drawings over the course of the year.

How to apply

There is no form for you to fill in. The college nominates you internally: the prize is awarded once a year on the recommendation of the Slade Professor. Your ‘application’ consists solely of the drawings you produce throughout the year.

How realistic are your chances?

Only current Slade students are eligible to win, and the Slade professor selects the winner rather than organising an open competition. Direct entry is not possible. The best course of action is to be enrolled at the Slade and to produce outstanding drawings.
