About this scholarship

James Mill MSc Scholarship

You will receive your full MSc tuition covered as well as a living allowance of approximately 13,700 EUR (£11,817) for the Master’s academic year. The scholarship is awarded to one of the top students on the MSc Economics programme at University College London (UCL) in the United Kingdom. It is named after the economist James Mill and is intended to prepare students for a PhD; it therefore recognises strong academic and research ambitions.

Who can apply

  • Degree you study: You have been offered a place on the one-year MSc Economics programme at UCL.
  • Your first degree: You must hold at least an Upper Second Class degree in Economics with a strong quantitative focus, or a very good Bachelor’s degree in another quantitative subject such as Mathematics, Statistics or Physics. Degrees in Business Administration, Business Management and Accounting will not be considered.
  • Test scores: If you obtained your bachelor’s degree outside the UK, you will need a GRE score of at least 162 in the quantitative section.
  • Research ambition: You wish to pursue a PhD and can demonstrate this through a compelling research proposal.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

Please apply via the Department of Economics at UCL as part of your application for the ‘MSc Economics’ master’s programme. You must include a compelling research proposal, which will be a decisive factor in the selection process.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective. It is awarded to just one applicant from a single competitive department and favours those who are seriously committed to pursuing a PhD, rather than simply those with good grades. The pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships, but every applicant is already an outstanding economist. It is your research proposal that sets you apart from the rest. If your grades, your quantitative background and your research proposals are well above average, you have a genuine chance of success.
